Induction cooktops use electromagnetic fields to heat cookware directly, so using pans made of magnetised materials is essential.
Most modern pans state on the packaging if they are induction compatible, but did you know the quality of your pans can still impact the performance of your induction equipment?
Here are some types of pans that are suitable for induction cooking:
Stainless Steel: Most stainless steel cookware is compatible with induction cooking because it contains iron, which is magnetic. Look for pans with a magnetic base to ensure proper induction heating.
Cast Iron: Cast iron pans are excellent for induction cooking as they are naturally magnetic. However, they can be heavy, so be mindful of the weight.
Enamel Cast Iron: Some enameled cast iron cookware is suitable for induction cooking, but not all. Check the manufacturer’s specifications to ensure it has a magnetic base.
Carbon Steel: Similar to cast iron, carbon steel is magnetic and can be used on induction cooktops. It’s lighter than cast iron and still provides excellent heat retention.
Magnetic Stainless Steel: Some pans are specifically labeled as “induction-ready” or “magnetic stainless steel.” These are designed to work well with induction cooktops.
Induction-Ready Nonstick Pans: Certain nonstick pans are made with a magnetic base to make them compatible with induction cooktops. However, not all nonstick pans can be used for induction cooking, so always check the product details.
The easiest way to check if your existing cookware is compatible with induction is to place a magnet on the bottom. If it sticks, the cookware should work on an induction cooktop. Keep in mind that the entire base of the pan needs to be in contact with the cooktop for effective heating. And always check the manufacturer’s recommendations and guidelines for specific cookware to ensure compatibility and prevent damage to your cookware or cooktop.
